Type Locality and Naming

Metangula Basin (Mozambique). A formal lithostratigraphic unit established within the Metangula Basin, a Karoo-aged graben straddling the border between Mozambique and Tanzania. Lower formation in Stormberg Gr in Metangula Basin (Mozambique)

Lithology and Thickness

Composed of a terrestrial clastic sequence, depicted in regional stratigraphic charts as an intercalated succession of sandstones and mudstones/siltstones.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the older Permian coal-bearing and mudstone successions (Moola Fm) of the Metangula Basin.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Lipirichi Fm.

Regional extent

Correlates with the lower-to-middle Triassic rift successions (such as portions of the Manda Beds Fm or equivalents of the Beaufort Gr/Stormberg Gr transition) in the eastern African rift basins.
